Face the Mongrel That Pursues You

Today’s Scripture Reading: Joshua 6:1–20 Key Verse: Joshua 6:1

Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in.

Do you realize that nobody went out of Canaan’s most formidable fortress city because its inhabitants were afraid to face Israel openly? Have you ever noticed that the devil does not deal with you openly? When I was learning about spiritual warfare, I would no sooner figure out where the enemy was coming from, then bam—he would hit me from the back. His attacks are never frontal; they never come from where you expect them.

If you have been experiencing a lot of marital problems lately, it is likely that those problems are a smoke screen. The enemy really may be targeting your children. He does not care about your marriage; he wants to get you so tied up and distracted with one another that you ignore your children. He hopes that by the time you figure that out, he can influence them to shoot somebody or contract a fatal disease through premarital sex.

Israel’s enemy in Jericho refused to confront the Israelites openly because they feared the God of Israel. The Israelites were the same people who crossed the Jordan walking on dry land. The devil is afraid of the God in you too. You have been running from somebody who is scared of you!

The devil knows that God saved you miraculously. He knows that God has His hand on you in a mighty way, and he knows that God does not waste time saving people who are not worth saving. He saves people for whom He has an eternal plan and purpose. All this time you have been running from a cosmic coward!

Do you not think it is time to turn around and tell the devil to get off your tracks? Any old mongrel dog thinks he is the boss when you run from him. It is when you turn around and face your pursuer that things quickly change! Make this declaration with me:

In Jesus’ name, I resist you, Satan. If you wonder why I leave such large footprints in the earth, it is because I follow in the footsteps of the Creator of all things. I stand in the shadow and favor of the King of kings and Lord of lords. I am washed in the blood of the sacrificed Lamb, and no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me—and that includes sending you back to hell where you belong!
